2011 Skate Amherstburg’s 40th Annual Ice Carnival – Please Don’t Stop the Music

Information for Parents and Skaters

Volunteers Needed

We need your help!!! Volunteers Needed! Click for more info

In past years our carnivals have been such a success because of the number of dedicated volunteers that gave their time to make it happen. We are once again seeking volunteers. There are many areas in which you can assist. A Volunteer Description Document outlining the various volunteer opportunities has been posted on the bulletin board. Please review the document and find an area where you feel you would like to volunteer. Please e-mail your interest to info@skateamherstburg.ca.

PLEASE NOTE:  The majority of this information has been updated however some items still need to be confirmed.  Final information will be available by March 15th.

Carnival Registration and Measurement

Junior, Intermediate and Senior Registration has taken place. Sharon Kawai and her volunteer crew will be set up in the lobby to take measurements of all skaters as they arrive for their session. Skaters will pay a Costume Rental fee of $10 and a refundable Costume Deposit Fee of $30 at the time of registration.

CanSkate Carnival Registration will be the week of January 31 and February 3, 2010. Costume rental fee and costume deposit fee will be as noted above.

Costume Pick Up

Carnival Costumes must be picked up by the skater or parent on March 21, 24, 25th between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. Costumes will be handed out from the Costume Room upstairs in the arena.

Volunteer Meeting

There will be a meeting for all people who will be volunteering for Carnival on Thursday, March 24, 2011 in the upstairs auditorium in the arena at 7:00 p.m. It is very important that you make this meeting — we will not be meeting again as a group before Carnival. This will be the time to ask any questions that you may have concerning the area in which you are volunteering. Volunteers will be given the option to purchase a single ticket for $5 to the show of their choice at this meeting. Subcommittee chairs, please encourage volunteer attendance.

Dress Rehearsal

Thursday, March 31, 2011

The Schedule may be accessed here (Dress Rehearsal Schedule) or in the arena on the Skate Amherstburg door.

Dress rehearsal begins at 3:45 p.m. and runs until 9:30 p.m. Please note that your child's skating time for Dress Rehearsal MAY NOT be at their regular skating time. Please check the schedule carefully for your child's skate time. Please have your skater in their costume and skates at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled time. Our "costume Mom" will be in the community room for any last minute adjustments to costumes.

Once the line before your skater's group goes on the ice, please gather in front of the hockey bench. A coach will line your children up and escort them to the ice when it is their turn. Skaters may wear sweaters and/or coats and mittens during the practice line.  Your skater will need hard guards as the skate tile does not extend to the on-ice door at the back corner.

Upon completion of the practice line please pick your skater and follow the signs for group photos which will be in the community room. Remember to have your skater wear skate guards.

Please enter the community room using the first door and exit using the far door. There could be a line of skaters waiting to get their photo taken. This will help us avoid congestion. Signs will be posted.

Professional Photographs

Hammond Photography will be on site during the Dress Rehearsal (March 31, 2011) to take individual and group photos. A complete package consisting of a group photo, single shot and button/pin will be sold on the day of the show or you may purchase individual shots (price to be announced). Cash only please. Payment will be collected and photographs picked up from the photographer on the day of Carnival until one half hour after the intermission for the first show. Photographs will not be available during the 2nd show.

If you have 2 children and you would like to get a photo of them together, the photographer will be available at 4:00 p.m. until the first line is ready. You can also wait until he has some free time between lines or until all photos have been completed. Please be prepared to wait as many of our skaters have to have photos taken and then head back on ice for another skate.

Advance Ticket Sales

Tickets will be sold for $10.00 per ticket per show for Adults and $8 for children ages 4-13. Children 3 and under are free (on your lap). One complimentary ticket to the evening performance will be given to each performing skater (one ticket per family). Participating skaters do not require a ticket. If paying by cheque, please make cheques payable to Skate Amherstburg.

Advance tickets will go on sale during all skating sessions the weeks of March 21-25 and March 28, 31, April 1, 2011 between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. Additional tickets will be available at the door on the day of the performance provided the arena capacity has not been reached. It is strongly recommended that you purchase tickets for your friends and family during the 2 weeks of Advance Ticket Sales.

As of the end of January we are in negotiations with Jeffrey Buttle; 2006 Olympic Bronze Medalist and 2008 World Champion.  More information will be coming shortly on Jeffrey’s appearance but we expect ticket sales to be brisk.  Seating is limited to 600 and if both shows are sold out we will add 150 standing room tickets per show at half price.

Video Sales

A DVD would be a lovely memento of your skater's performance! This year Unique Video Production will be taping both shows. You will have the opportunity to indicate which show you would like to order. Advance Prepaid DVD sales will be during all skating sessions the weeks of March 21-25 and March 28, 31, April 1, 2011 (the same week as advance ticket sales) between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. Prepaid DVD orders will also be taken the day of the Carnival; however there will be a slight increase in price. For best pricing, take advantage of the advance video sales! This is also a fund raising effort on behalf of Skate Amherstburg. We would appreciate your support.

DVD prices: $15 during advance sales and $20 if ordered on the day of the performance. Cheques or cash is acceptable. Please make cheques payable to Skate Amherstburg. DVD's will be available for pick up on Thursday, April 14, 2011 from 4:00-7:00 p.m.

Carnival Date

Saturday, April 2, 2011

Time

2 shows: 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. All skaters skate in each show.

Doors open 1 hour before the show begins. Please do not arrive earlier as we will be still setting up.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

All skaters should arrive in costume a half-hour before the show begins — EVEN IF YOUR SKATER IS ONLY SKATING IN THE 2ND HALF OF THE SHOW. For safety reasons, we are asking your co-operation with the following procedures for both shows.

An Ice Show such as this takes months to organize and plan. All skaters have been working hard on practicing their routine. We ask your co-operation in watching the entire show. When the audience begins to leave the arena because their own skater has finished, it is disruptive to the next performer. As well, all skaters would like to show what they have learned during the year. This is their time to shine — please stay and watch and enjoy the show.

CanSkate parents should bring their skater to the Dressing Room Supervisor. A Dressing Room Schedule is provided below. Due to lack of space, we request that only one parent accompany the skater into the dressing room. Upon check in, each parent will be given a coloured card with the skater's name. Please present this card when picking up your skater at the end of the show.

All skaters will remain with the Dressing Room Supervisors for the entire performance. Skaters will watch the show in chairs at the on-ice level. When they have skated, they will return to the chairs. At intermission, all skaters will return to their dressing rooms. One parent will be allowed back into the dressing room if they so desire to visit their skater. Dressing Room Supervisors will be in the room at all times. When the 2nd half of the show begins, all skaters will return to the arena to watch the rest of the skaters perform. If you must pick up your skater before the end of the show, we ask that you please wait until after the skaters have returned to the dressing room at intermission. If you do pick up your skater before the end of the show, the skater must then remain with you for the rest of the show and will not be able to skate in the Grand Finale. All skaters return to the ice one last time at the end of the show for the Grand Finale.

Junior, Intermediate and Senior skaters will see the Dressing Room Supervisor assigned to their area to be checked in — just so we know they have arrived.

Costume Return

Costumes will be returned immediately following the FINAL show (5:30 start time) in the skater's dressing room so please remember to bring your skater's street clothes to wear home.

Each dressing room will have a Costume Volunteer assigned to collect costumes after the last show. After collecting the costume, the parents will receive their costume deposit.

  • Dressing Room 1 - Monday CanSkate
  • Dressing Room 3 - Thursday CanSkate 1 (5:15-6:00)

Fund Raising

PLEASE SUPPORT SKATE AMHERSTBURG WITH THE FOLLOWING FUND RAISING INITIATIVES HELD DURING CARNIVAL:

Programs will be on sale in the lobby for $3 each. Please purchase one as a keepsake of your child's participation in the Carnival.

Flower bouquets will be on sale in the lobby prior to each show and during intermission for $3.

50/50 tickets will also be sold prior to each show and during intermission for $2 each or 3 for $5 — one draw per show.

Also, don't forget to order your DVD. If you missed the advance DVD order, you may still order your DVD the day of the Carnival at a slightly higher price.

Proceeds from all of these fund raising efforts go towards Carnival expenses. We appreciate your support.
